“Paris Qui Dort” at CFO

The Centre Franco-Omanais (CFO) hosted an extraordinary artistic evening where classic cinematic imagery blended seamlessly with the magic of live Eastern music in a unique Cine-Concert. The event reimagined the famous French silent film “Paris qui dort” (1924) by the pioneering surrealist director René Clair, breathing new life into it through an evocative, live oud performance.

As a pioneering masterpiece of French sci-fi comedy, “Paris qui dort” tells the surreal story of Paris mysteriously frozen in time, leaving only a handful of people awake to wander through the still city.

During this performance, the music was far more than a background score; it acted as a new heartbeat infused into Clair’s timeless vision. Through live oud accompaniment, I crafted an artistic dialogue that blended the visual space of French cinema with the rich melodic identity of Arabic music, adding fresh dramatic depth and emotional resonance to the frozen cinematic frames.

This cine-concert served as a vibrant crossroads where film, music, and imagination met, bridging Paris and the Arab world in perfect harmony. Reimagining Western silent classics through live Eastern instrumentation opens new creative horizons, proving that music can recontextualize visual masterpieces and enhance their cross-cultural appeal.
